RefWorks is a web-based citation management tool that is free to Penn State users.


Use folders:  References may exist in more than one folder and folders can have sub-folders.

  1. Click My Folders on the left.
  2. Click Add a Folder, and name your folder.
  3. Click "all documents" or "recent documents"
  4. Find the reference you want to move, click to select it (you can select more than one document at a time), and use the folder iconbutton at the top or drag it over into your new folder. 
Other Tips:
  • Click the search icon magnifying glass search icon in the upper right corner to search across the full-text of your library.
  • Add tags tag icon and notes to references to make them easier to find.
  • Remove duplicates by clicking the Tools icon in the RefWorks menu bar menu and selecting "find duplicates"

Reading and Annotating PDFs

To read and annotate documents in your RefWorks library

  • Select the reference you want
  • Click the blue Read button on the right
  • Use the icons in the top menu bar to highlight text, make comments in the document, and add general notes
