About the African American Voices Collection

African American autobiographies are the core of the African American Voices collection, which has expanded to include voices of notable African American novelists, scientists, artists, historians, and more. As a small browsable collection, these books are just a portion of the published works by Black and African American authors. Selected titles include notable and unique works reflecting the interests of Penn State Beaver students, and serve as a resource for the campus community and beyond. Additional works may be located by searching the University Libraries' catalog.

History

The collection recognizes and is inspired by the work of Dr. Russell C. Brignano, professor emeritus of English and scholar of African American autobiography. Dr. Brignano donated many of his personal copies to help establish the collection, and in 1997 the African American Autobiography collection was dedicated in his honor.
