W. E. B. Du Bois was a public intellectual, sociologist, and activist on behalf of the African American community. The collection recognizes and is inspired by the work of Dr. Russell C. Brignano, professor emeritus of English and scholar of African American autobiography. Dr. Brignano donated many of his personal copies to help establish the collection, and in 1997 the African American Autobiography collection was dedicated in his honor.
