APA Format

APA (American Psychological Association) style is one of the most common citation styles. The resources below will help you properly cite both in-text and on your references page.

Important Elements for ALL Citations:

  • Author (last name, initials only for first & middle names)
  • Date of publication of article (year and month for monthly publications; year, month and day for daily or weekly publications)
  • Title of article (capitalize only the first word of title and subtitle, and proper nouns)
  • Title of publication (or container) in italics (i.e., Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Newsweek, New York Times)
  • Volume number in italics and issue number, if given
  • Page numbers of article if a print resource
  • For articles retrieved online, include URL or DOI, if available

If you are looking at a popular source, which is what you're using for this class, you likely won't find page numbers or volume number or issue number. That's ok! You will want to be sure to include the URL of the source.
