At Penn State Abington, a Chancellor's Grant funds the Affordable Course Content Faculty Fellowship (ACCFF) which enables the library to support faculty to adopt open or affordable course materials. Faculty are given a small stipend along with library and instructional design support identify open or affordable course materials and integrate them into their courses. The grant opens in the spring semester and supports the adoption of new materials for the subsequent fall or spring semesters. You can read more about the first cohort of faculty here. Due to the success of the pilot year, the grant was renewed and the Penn State Abington Student Government Association wrote letters of commendation to the participating faculty.
Penn State also runs the Affordable Course Transformation Grant (ACT@PSU) which supports faculty in the adaption and authoring of new course materials. You can learn more about ACT here.
Open Educational Resources and Open Access
Although Open Educational Resources and Open Access share common goals they refer to different ways of sharing knowledge. Open Access refers to research that is free and available on the public internet with the rights for users to read, download, copy, distribute, link, and use for indexing and data. Open Educational Resources, on the other hand, refers to teaching, learning, and research materials of any medium that have been released under an open license that permits access, use, adaptation, and redistribution.
