Welcome Greater Allegheny Gators!
The Tri-Campus Reading Rumble celebrates the joy of reading for fun while also providing an opportunity to best our adversaries at PSU Fayette (the Fireflies) and PSU Beaver (the Beavers) in the least lethal form of competition.
Reading to learn and succeed in your classes is super important, and of course we support that. But research shows there are many benefits of "leisure reading", including:
- stress-reduction
- improved mood
- better sleep (especially when you put down your phone for a paper or audio book)
- building vocabulary, writing skills, and critical thinking
- improved focus, concentration, memory, and empathy
The school year can stressful, but reading even for a few minutes can help you relax and provide a momentary escape, which may even help you learn better! Plus, we'll have monthly events and prizes for individual and campus achievements.
YOU BELONG HERE!
Sorry for yelling, but it's true. We hope to grow a community of readers at GA. It doesn't matter what you like to read or how fast you read. If you're an avid reader or if you rarely read outside of class but want to try something new, there's room for you here!
What Counts as "Reading"?
Probably more than you think!
Reading includes engaging with paper/print, digital, and/or audio formats
For the purposes of the Reading Rumble, a completed "read" can be:
- typical books (print, ebook, audiobook)
- graphic novels and comic books
- fanfiction
- podcasts
- magazine or newspaper articles
- the collection of things you read or listen to as you fall down a rabbit hole while researching an interesting topic (like when Andrew looks up an old pro wrestler and spends two hours reading Wikipedia articles)
No expectations or judgments! What you enjoy reading and choose to read is entirely up to you. While there are benefits to reading the classics, there are many stories to choose from. Some are critically acclaimed, some are impossible to put down, and others might just speak to you. Read what you like, or ask for recommendations if you're unsure what to read next (see the "Reading Recommendations" button on the left).
About the Challenge
- STEP 1: Set a personal goal
Challenge yourself! Create a personal reading goal and enter it on the "sign up" page. All students who sign up by SEPTEMBER 27 are eligible for a FREE READING RUMBLE T-SHIRT!
- Examples of goals: I will...
- read for at least 20 minutes each day
- read at least 10 pages each day
- read one book just for fun this semester
- read at least one book per month
- keep up with a podcast series
- try reading a graphic novel
- try reading a book from a different genre than I usually read
- STEP 2: Track and report your progress
Tracking your progress toward your goal helps you stay on course and see your progress. Submit a reading log when you complete a read to share your progress toward your goal! Finishing a read and submitting a reading log adds a book toward GA's campus total!
- Rate and review your reads
We'll share your ratings and reviews. Maybe you'll interest or inspire someone else!
- STEP 3: Join Reading Rumble events or organize your own
Have an idea for an event? Contact us! List of events coming soon.
- STEP 4: Crush the Beavers and Fireflies under the collective weight of the Gators' total reads!
