Geographic information can be found in a variety of sources including:

  • encyclopedias - entries typically include information on the topography, climate, economics and other aspects of that particular place.
  • comprehensive plans - usually drafted by county, these planning documents usually include information about the physical and economic aspects of a region.
  • travel guides - many travel guides include geographic information about a region.

In the CAT, you can find books about the geography of a place by just adding "geography" to the search:

[place name] Geography

What's a Gazetteer? A gazetteer is a dictionary of place names. By searching the CAT, you can find a wide selection of gazetteers. General gazetteers have a Library of Congress call number of G103.
