Search Strategies

To find relevant results in LionSearch, a database, or Google:

Try using Boolean operators (and, or, not):

AND narrows your search results

  • medicare AND enactment

OR expands and broadens your search results

  • counterculture OR hippies

NOT excludes and narrows your search results

  • Beatles NOT beetles

Try using quote marks around phrases (words naturally spoken together and names of people):

  • "civil rights act"
  • "miss America"
  • "Woodstock Music Festival"
  • "Martin Luther King"

Try using site:. to limit your web domain (.edu - .org - .gov. - .mil):

Using Limiters and Other Filters

Publication Date

Find the Advanced Search Options (Here is the link for FIND/ Lionsearch).

Locate the publication date, and enter 1960 and 1970 for your year range. Add search terms above and they should all be results from this decade.

If you're looking at a specific event, you can also consider a narrower range. 

Example: Kent State Shooting occurred on May 4, 1970, so searching (m/d/yyyy)  5/4/1970 to 5/20/1970 would give results showing coverage immediately after the event.

Check the boxes for periodical type sources:

- Article, Magazine, Magazine Article, Newspaper or  Newspaper Article
