Creative Commons Licenses

What do Creative Commons Licenses (CCL) do?

  • CCL tools forge a balance inside the traditional “all rights reserved” setting that copyright law creates.
  • CCL tools give individual creators and large companies/institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work.
  • CCL tools and users offer a pool of content that can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed, and built upon, all within the boundaries of copyright law.

CCL Features:

  • All CCLs have important features in common. These common features serve as the baseline, on top of which licensors (creators) can choose to grant additional permissions when deciding how they want their work to be used.
    • Every CCL helps licensors retain copyright while allowing others to copy, distribute, and make use of their work non-commercially.
    • Every CCL ensures licensors get the credit for their work that they deserve.
    • Every CCL works around the world and lasts as long as applicable copyright lasts, because they are built on copyright.
