You will have 3 assignments for this course:


1. Self-Concept / Identity assignment: 50 points

Each student will complete a PowerPoint presentation to share with his/her peers in class.

PowerPoint will include the following from the required text; The Adolescent Development , Relationships, and Culture (Chapter 6): o Picture(s) of the student during adolescence and Emerging Adulthood.

Discuss the following key points:

  • Importance of a good self-concept: define self-concept according to the text. What were some experiences you had in adolescence that shaped your self-concept?
  •  Define self-esteem according to the text. What are some experiences you believe shaped your self-esteem?
  • Has your self-concept and self-esteem change in your Emerging Adulthood; how and why?
  • Identity: define identity according to the text. What are some experiences you had that you believe played a role in your development of your identity in adolescence and Emerging Adulthood?
  • Be creative with your PowerPoint. This assignment will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned to real life experience, YOUR life experience. Share what you feel comfortable sharing with your peers.
  • You will be presenting your PowerPoint in class and will enjoy your peers’ presentations.

 

2. Cross-Cultural Assignment:

Choose an ethnicity different than yourself (For example, ethnicity: Guatemalan American, Asian American, Mexican American, African American, Italian American, German American….).

  • Utilize the text (The Adolescent Development, Relationships, and Culture) regarding impact of culture on adolescence, chapter 2 (2.5), chapter 3 (3.3), chapter 6 (6.3).
  • Develop a PowerPoint presentation that will discuss the following key points: Description of the chosen ethnicity (for example, Guatemalan Americans: Guatemala is in South America, the native language is Spanish, the cultural history is mainly reflected by Spanish and Mayan influences, the Spanish influences are…the Mayan influences are, and …).
  • Describe impact of your chosen ethic culture on adolescences using Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory: Chapter 2 (2.5). What racial bias implications might be encountered for your chosen ethnicity? Chapter 3 (3.3). Ethnic and Racial Identity: Chapter 6 (6.3), Acculturation Options, developing an Ethnic or Racial Identity.
  • What strengths did you identify from you chosen ethnicity that can play a role in the development of an adolescent? What do you feel is the most important information for your fellow peers to know about your chosen ethnicity? Other thoughts you want to share.

Cite sources on last slide (Wikipedia is not a source!). You may use websites, books, and scholarly articles. If you use all websites be sure they are reliable sources for example, .gov.

Presentations will be required to be 15-20 minutes.

For full text items, click the "full text online" link to go to the full text of the article.

  • If you see the Penn State "GetIt" menu and you need to click the word "article" to get to the full text. 
  • If there is no "article" link, click the word "journal" to get to the journal page and look for the correct year, volume, issue and pages for the article you need.
Tip: Save the relevant sources into the LionSearch temporary folder by clicking on the small folder icon to right side of the item.  When you are finished compiling your sources, click on the folder icon at the top of the screen and email or print (which allows you to copy into your clipboard) the references so you can easily add them to your project. 
 
CAVEAT: computer systems make mistakes when auto-formatting.  
Don’t lose your work!  Unless you sign up for Refworks, items are saved in LionSearch ONLY for your current session.  You won’t be able to go back later and see a list of saved items.

When working on extensive research projects, you will need to collect, organize and format all those citations!

The following tools are appropriate to use at Penn State. They all allow you to store and search for your references, as well as link with MS Word to easily create in-text citations and bibliographies.
