Diversity in Education Search Tips

If you are researching Education among a certain demographic group, use Education databases, such as ERIC, and specialized databases pertaining to your group of interest. You can find many of them in the Area and Cultural Studies Subject Guides.

Use each database's thesaurus or subject headings list to identify the best wording for your topic. For example, ERIC uses:

  • African American children (NOT "Black children")
  • Disabilities (NOT "disabled")
  • LGBTQ People (NOT "LGBTQ+")
  • When researching religion, be sure to include terms for the religion (such as "Islam" or "Judaism"), as well as terms for people of that faith (such as "Muslims" or "Jews")

At the same time, other databases, such as Sociological Abstracts, may use different terms.
