Searching for out of print works

Follow one or more of these steps to locate an out of print work:

  • Check commercial websites such as Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, etc.
  • Check out of print sites such as Alibris and others listed on this guide.
  • Check eBay and similar re-sale sites.
  • Check HathiTrust or Google Books to see if the item is available for free, such as an out-of-copyright work.
  • Check WorldCat.org to verify details and identify potential alternate versions, e.g., a scanned version.
  • Contact a local bookshop near where the book was published, or near the topic of the work. 
  • Contact the local historical society or library to see if they have copes for sale or can refer you to a local bookshop.
  •  Register your interest in obtaining a copy vendors such as https://www.alibris.com/bookfetch
  • WorldCat.org may show some libraries that own the work. You can submit a request via your local library to borrow the item.
