ENGL 004: Basic Writing Skills

Professor Roger Johnson

Plato and Perry

Write from a personal point of view or objectively!

Plato's Metaphors:

  • Students emerge from parents' attitudes and values to begin formulating their own attitudes and values.
  • Students adapt to leaving home for the first time.
  • Students process education, politics, or religion.

Perry's Scheme:

  • Students understand knowledge, their ideas about knowing, and how knowing is part of the cognitive process.
  • Students pass through a predictable nine-position progression from dualist to relativist epistemologies.
  • Students move from viewing truth in terms of right and wrong to recognizing multiple versions of truth.
