Environmental Pollution Control/Environmental Engineering

Links to databases for air and water quality, solid waste management, and environmental law and policy . Also helpful for topics such as environmental chemistry and toxicology, sanitation and treatment processes, and treatment plant design.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Environmental Pollution Control/Environmental Engineering Subject Guide. We've designed this guide to help with various courses in your program.

Below are some basic research tips and general resources that may help.

EPC/ENVE Search Tips

In Compendex and other databases, start with the "thesaurus" under the "search" link to explore recommended wording for your search. For instance, the accepted terminology is not "engineering management" but simply "management."

For example, along with "air pollution," "soil pollution," and "water pollution," Compendex's thesaurus recommends:

  • Agricultural runoff
  • Air purification
  • Air quality
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Fumes
  • Greenhouse gases
  • Hazardous materials spills
  • Particulate emissions
  • Pesticide effects
  • Water filtration
  • Water management
  • Water supply
  • ... and other phrases.

In addition, some law/public policy databases allow you to search by jurisdiction or other criteria. Check a database's "Advanced Search" to see if it allows you to search by:

  • Jurisdiction (state, country, continent, etc.)
  • Political leaning (left/liberal, centrist, right/conservative, etc.)
  • Type of document (journal article, government document, report, etc.)

Open Educational Resources for Engineers

The American Society for Engineering Education's (ASEE) Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) recently created a wonderful guide for Open Educational Resources (OER) for a wide variety of engineering disciplines. If you are looking for additional resources, free of cost and openly available, please review ASEE's ELD resource page at this link.
