a guide to resources for PL SC 1

Hometown & District Profiles

Hometown Official Website

The "official page" of your home town will have a lot of local government information including: history, official minutes, organizations, directories, and core issues.

The easiest way is to search Google:

Directions: search Google for your hometown's official home page. For example, to find the official home of the town of Enfield New Hampshire I searched:  enfield new hampshire official home page

Citing Government Information

Important considerations when citing a government publication:

  • The “author” of any government material is almost always “institutional” — an agency, office, committee, department, etc. — not an individual person.
  • When in doubt, provide the full “hierarchy” of the issuing agency as an author.
  • U.S. Federal Government "authors" in citations should begin with "United States" or "U.S."

Example: US Census home profile

Directions: Go to the US Census Bureau's profile page: click here

Search for your town keeping in mind that the Census Bureau might be calling it a town, village, or CDP. Click on view profile on the right side of the page. To get the URL click on the button Share Profile you will use this URL for your citation.

EXAMPLE

United States. Census Bureau. (ND). Enfield CDP, New Hampshire Profile. Retrieved from Census Bureau Web site: https://data.census.gov/profile/Enfield_CDP,_New_Hampshire?g=160XX00US3324260

Example: Official Hometown

Directions: search Google for your hometown's official home page. For example, to find the official home of the town of Enfield New Hampshire I searched:  enfield new hampshire official home page

The citation will follow the government hierarchy...

EXAMPLE

New Hampshire. Town of Enfield. (ND). Town of Enfield New Hampshire. Retrieved from the Town of Enfield Website: https://www.enfield.nh.us/

Note: make sure the title used from the website is used in your citation. For example, if the website says "Official Website of the Town of Enfield New Hampshire" then us that in your citation.
