OSTP Mandate: Public Access Policies for Federally Funded Research

Quick guide to public access requirements from federal funding agencies.

National Science Foundation (NSF)

The NSF Public Access Policy requirements apply to awards resulting from proposals submitted, or due, on or after the January 2016 effective date:

  • Fully covers published outputs.
  • Fully covers data
  • Requires all research proposals to include a Data Management Plan (DMP).

NSF requires its funded grantees to:

  • Deposit an electronic version of final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts in the DOE PAGES system. 
  • Submit data developed with NSF funding to an appropriate repository.

NSF allows proposers to request funds for the ”costs of documenting, preparing, publishing or otherwise making available to others the findings and products of the work conducted under the grant.
