WHAT: Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is as an all day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. Universities and cultural institutions around Philadelphia are hosting edit-a-thons throughout the month of March, where participants gather in one place to edit, add, and improve Wikipedia entries. Penn State Libraries at State College are also hosting an edit-a-thon today.
WHY: Participating in an event like Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon improves the breadth and scope of women and the arts articles in Wikipedia and encourages female contributions. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming imbalance in an important repository of shared knowledge.
HOW:Register, bring your ideas and interests, and a laptop if you have one (if not, laptops will be provided.) We'll provide instruction for beginner Wikipedians, books & reference materials, and coffee & snacks.
